Selena Quintanilla-Perez, was a young Mexican-American singer/songwriter on a journey to success in the music industry. She was born in Lake Jackson, Texas on April 16, 1971 to Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcella Ofelia Samora. Selena's passion for singing began at the age of three, and when she was 9, she started singing witht the band formed by her father, "Selena y Los Dinos." The family relocated to Corpus Christi, Texas after being evicted from their home due to bankruptcy. Selena and her band took their talents to local parties, fairs, quinceañeras, weddings and soon their efforts paid off when in 1985 the young performer recorder her first album at just fourteen years old. This was the beginning of a career that would flourish very quickly. Being just a young woman, acquired fame and recognition in the Latin American community, make her one of the most prominent rising starts. Her career came to an abrupt end however on March 31,1995, she was shot and killed by her manager Yolanda Zaldivar, at a Days Inn Hotel Selena agreed to meet her at to retrieve paperwork for tax purposes and to fire her, as she had been embezzling money from Selena's fan club.
Yolanda surrendered and was arrested peacefully by police, she was convicted of murder in the First Degree and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole in 30 years. Selena was transported to the local hospital, and died at 1:05 pm from blood loss. Selena left a legacy behind, her death was front page news on the New York times and was documented as a widespread impact. Numerous ceremonies and vigils were held in her honor and her music was played non stop. The "Mexican Madonna" as many have refer to her, will always live in our hearts, her music will continue to be heard and appreciated by those who admired her talent and charisma, and she will never be forgotten.
